About Shonae Eddins - Bennett

Shonae Eddins Bennett is a proud Birmingham native and lifelong public servant who made history as the first woman to lead the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. A graduate of A.H. Parker High School and UAB, she began her career with the City of Birmingham in 1990 in the City Council's office. She steadily rose through key role in Community Development, the CrossPlex, and Parks and Recreation department.
In 2018, she became Director of Parks and Recreation, where she now oversees 119 parks, 18 recreation centers, 18 pools, multiple landmark facilities, and a team of over 300 employees. Her visionary leadership has transformed community spaces and programs, earning her recognition as a trailblazer committed to service, equity, and opportunity.
